Vietnam and Uruguay agreed to speed up
negotiations for agreements covering various fields, particularly
economy-trade, to create a favorable legal framework for long-term and
sustainable cooperation.
The consensus
was reached during the meeting between Deputy PM, FM Pham Gia Khiem and
Uruguayan FM Luis Almagro in Hanoi this afternoon.
Minister Luis
Almagro is on his visit to Vietnam to attend the High-level Tripartite
Conference on the UN's Delivering as One Initiative, which takes place
in Hanoi on June 14-17.
Deputy PM Khiêm
reaffirmed Vietnam’s consistent policy to develop close ties with Latin
American countries, including Uruguay.
He said that
the two countries have various potentials, noticeably in such fields of
husbandry, agriculture-forestry, bio-technology, culture and sports.
Mr. Luis
Almagro said that his country treasure the UN Conference here as it
provides a good chance for Uruguay to deeply engage in the UN’s
activities as well as to cement ties with Vietnam which is gaining
rising prestige and role in the international arena.
Both Vietnam
and Uruguay are among the 8 countries to pilot the One UN Initiative.
The Latin
American country plans to open its Consulate in Hanoi tomorrow. Minister
Luis Almagro believed that the bilateral relations would advance
strongly in the time to come thanks to the two sides’ efforts.
On the same
day, Minister Luis Almagro and Vietnamese Minister of Science and
Technology Hoang Van Phong signed a cooperation agreement between the
two Governments.
He also had
separate meetings with Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Le Danh
Vinh and Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Đoàn Duy Khương to exchange ways to expand economic, trade and
scientific linkages.
Vietnam and
Uruguay signed a framework agreement on cooperation and a Memorandum of
Understanding between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs during
President Tabaré Vázquez’s visit to Vietnam in 2007.
The agreement
on visa exemption for Vietnamese and Uruguayan diplomatic and public
passport holders came into effect since June 2007./.
